harry100's Prompt #508: "Village"
- - -
Harry Potter arrived home late from work one evening, bone tired but Ginny was away on tour so he still had things to deal with.
"Hello Delia," he said to the teenager who met him at the door, "how are things?"
"They're tucked in and asleep," said Delia Finnigan-Thomas.
"Did they behave?"
"Yes, of course." There was a twitch in the babysitter's expression that hinted this was not complete truth.
"Thank you then," Harry said. He paid her a little extra, and send her home through the fire.
Harry made a cup of tea, then his "sleeping" children burst in.
"Daddy!" cried James, Al and Lily as they burst in, waving excitedly.
"Hi kids!" said Harry hugging them at random and catching Al twice. "Did you have a good time at Diagon Alley with Aunt Luna?"
It cost Harry a slight pang to ask, he normally took them himself come raise or shine but there was an egyptian Mummy Flu epidemic at work and he'd had to take charge being the most senior Auror standing.
"Yes!" They chorused. "We had ice cream."
"And did you listen to Mr Fortescue about history?"
They had they said. Then the stories came out.
Harry smiled as his kids chattered on revealing more than they meant to.
"I got lost but Neville brought me back!" said Al.
Harry was very glad he was only hearing about this after the fact.
"Ms Bell wouldn't let me test a Firebolt!" said Lily indignantly.
"A real one?" Harry said weakly. "She had to. You're much too little, Lily."
"I almost got into Knockturn Alley," said James "But Uncle George stopped me."
Quite right to, was Harry's thought.
They said it took a village to raise a child, Harry thought that might be an understatement for his kids.
